Welcome to the IMA Detroit Chapter!

President's Message

Welcome to the Detroit Chapter of the IMA (Institute of Management Accountants)

Tom MieleThis is where we’re going.

IMA Detroit is a group of volunteers dedicated to the support of the 80% of Accountants that do not want to pursue a public accounting career.  We promote the CMA (Certified Management Accountant) credential as the gold standard of achievement in accounting and financial management.  Holders of a CMA can earn nearly $25,000 higher total compensation per year than their non-certified peers.

We encourage Accounting/Financial Professionals and Students to achieve the CMA credential. The CMA indicates the holder is a dedicated career professional, ready to partner at the top of every organization, to help management make sound plans and decisions.

Please read my recent article: "The Importance of CPE"

This is why we are going.

80% of all accounting and finance majors end up working inside a company. Yet the perception so many believe is that you need to hire a certified public accountant to manage those functions.  That training often does not provide the skills necessary for such an undertaking.

The CMA credential identifies that a professional is rigorously tested in the skills that organizations need the most; the skills required to make intelligent, forward looking decisions about where a company is going – the most critical elements to survival.  The rear view mirror of attestation and compliance are mildly interesting; but planning is where the excitement of an organization comes to life.

This is who is going with us.

IMA Detroit is comprised of nearly 500 members, representing a broad spectrum of companies and industries in Southeast Michigan.  Our members work for multi-national companies, smaller privately held firms, non-profit entities and academic institutions.  This wide array of financial professionals provides a great opportunity to network and share experiences.

This is how we are going to get there.

Our regular monthly meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month* at the Southfield Marriott, 27033 Northwestern Highway, Southfield, Mi 48034.  This is a new “home” for us, as of October 2012.

IMA Detroit offers a marvelous environment to network and an opportunity to earn CPE at a very reasonable price.  We offer annual training conferences that are also an exceptional value.

Finally, IMA Detroit is dedicated to reaching students in the Detroit area colleges.  We provide insight into the reality of accounting careers with the CMA designations boldly attached to their name.  We give them hope that they do not have to pursue public accounting experience simply for the sake of achieving the wrong credential for the right job.  This provides a tremendous opportunity for each of us to mentor the professionals who represent the future of management accounting.

Join us to network, to learn, to pursue your CMA or to give back to the community; they are all noble causes.
