Welcome to the Lansing-Jackson Chapter of IMA!

President's Message

It is with great honor that I address you as members of the Lansing/Jackson Chapter.  I am looking forward to my 2nd year as your Chapter President, and I would like to introduce myself to those I have not yet met.  I am a Manager of Investment Accounting at Jackson National Life Insurance Company located in Lansing, prior to which I was in public accounting in Detroit.  I hold a Masters of Science in Accounting (MSA) from Western Michigan University and have a CPA designation.  Currently, I have Part 4 of the CMA exam remaining.   This is my first position on the Board and I am energized to fill this position.

Many of you will recall receiving a letter from the IMA stating that this Chapter was inactive and that the members must take action to keep the Chapter from being dissolved.  Several members met in April and unanimously agreed that it is in the best interest of the members and local businesses to maintain an active and thriving Lansing/Jackson Chapter.  During this meeting the following individuals were elected to the Board of Directors.

- President – Gareth Beaty

- Vice President – Education and Meetings, Israel Velez, Jr.

- Vice President – Communications, Amy Maneval

- Vice President – Membership and Corporate Development, Anne Meehan

- Treasurer, Doug Dykstra

- Secretary, Louis Long

It was inspiring to see the passion and resounding support by the attending members.  The Michigan Council members also attended the meeting and dedicated their talents and experience to the revitalization of this Chapter.

The members of the Board of Directors are dedicated to this Chapter and are committed to guiding the Chapter towards success.  However, while we will provide the opportunities by establishing meetings, the seats need to be occupied by you as the Chapter’s members.  I would like for you to keep in mind that these meetings provide opportunities to listen to presentations on relevant topics (e.g. economic updates, fraud, and tax and audit updates), network with other members, converse about best practices, as well as obtain CPE.

Because of the geographic diversity of this Chapter, we will alternate meeting sites between Jackson and Lansing.

In addition, we have the privilege of having the Michigan Fall Conference (to be held October 25th) located in Lansing.  The Fall Conference provides 8 CPE credits at an affordable price and also allows networking with IMA members from across the state.

I am working along with the Board to set an agenda for this Chapter that meets the requirements of an active Chapter set forth by the IMA and create a solid foundation on which to expand the Chapter in the future.

As we move through the year, I look forward to meeting each of you and encourage you to take an active role in your Chapter.

Gareth Beaty, CPA

Lansing/Jackson Chapter President 2010-2011
