President's Message:  Chuck Phillips, CMA, Council President 2016-2017

2016-2017 Council President, Chuck Phillips, CMA

It is hard to believe that the 2016-2017 IMA year is coming to a close.     My hope is that you are planning on being more active on either the chapter or council level.  We need your help!

It has been an honor to be President of the IMA Michigan Council.  The board is comprised of great people and great friends.  It has also been an exceptional year that included our best Fall Conference yet along with having the IMA Global Student Leadership Conference held close to home in Detroit.

Now I am looking forward to the new IMA year.  The upcoming year will be IMA’s 98th anniversary and two years from now IMA’s 100th anniversary.  As members, we can be proud of being participants in the century of service that the IMA has provided to our profession.

Planning has begun for our 16th Annual Fall Conference which will be held at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing, MI. Please plan on attending this year’s fall conference on Monday, October 23, 2017.

Thank you,

Charles (Chuck) Phillips, CMA

To every person you see for the first time before noon, say "Good Morning". To every person you see at the end of the day on your way out, say "Good Night". When you ask someone for something, say "Please", and when they deliver say "Thank You". Thanks to that gift from my very first boss, I've heeded those words of wisdom throughout my long career."

Accountants and Tech: A Game Changer

By Joshua G. Coyne, Emily M. Coyne, and Kenton B. Walker

"To no one's surprise, dramatic increases in technological innovation and investment have continued to occur in recent years as organizations create and collect data. ...Two major roadblocks exist to realizing the benefits from new data sources. First, cooperation between information systems/technology specialists and accountants to develop information systems has diminished in recent years. Second, there's an absence of expertise in data analytics among accountants even though they possess the broadest knowledge of business activities..." Read more.

The Quest for Privacy

By William M. Baker, CMA; Kevin L. Kemerer, CMA, CFM; and Kay Poston

Naturally as caretakers of data and information, management accountants are closely involved with data operations. They're certainly responsible for helping make data secure, but, given the importance of confidentiality in the IMA Statement of Ethical Professional Practice and the media attention paid to breaches in privacy, management accountants must also focus on safeguarding the privacy of data and information."
