This web-based newsletter serves as notice of our quarterly board meetings and communicates news of Council activities to our board and chapters. News items are shown with headlines and a short intro, linked to the full article on our Michigan Council web pages. News occurring between quarterly newsletter issues will be posted on our Council website, so please check there regularly, too.

President's Letter-July 2012

As the 2012-2013 IMA Michigan Council President, it is my pleasure to share the excitement that’s in store for those involved in our vibrant organization this year. Whether you are an existing member or a new member, I encourage you to take an active role in IMA and to enhance your experience by becoming more involved in the following ways:

  • Remain or get active in a local IMA chapter.
  • Register early for our annual Fall Conference.

Past President's Letter-July 2012

We have completed another successful year for the Michigan Council and have once again achieved National recognition and received the Institute’s Council Award of Excellence for its service to its Chapters and its Council activities.

I want to thank the Council Board members that have guided the Council during the year and have been instrumental in achieving its goals and objectives for 2011-2012.

I want to congratulate Anne Meehan as the incoming President of the Council and as the Council works to serve the Chapters during the 2012 – 2013 year, please let us know how we can help you promote the Institute of Management Accountants and provide benefits to the Michigan and Northern Indiana members of the IMA.

Register Now for CMA Review Courses

If you're serious about becoming a Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Cleary University has the program for you.  Cleary University is the only institution in Michigan to offer the Certified Management Accountant Learning System, developed by the Institute of Management Accountants.

Fall classes covering CMA Review Part 1: Financial Planning, Performance and Control start on September 15, 2012 and meet five times every other Saturday.  Winter classes covering Part 2:  Financial Decision Making begin on Saturday, February 9, 2013 and meet six times every other Saturday. CMA exams are offered in Jan & Feb, May & Jun, and Sep & Oct.

Ann Arbor Chapter News

Watch the Ann Arbor Chapter site for the lineup of exciting informative speakers.  All this from the Chapter that placed 29th out of almost 200 in their division of the IMA's National Competition.  "Congratulations!"

Detroit Chapter News

The Detroit Chapter won 6th place in the Stephenson Division of IMA improving on last year's 8th place finish.  Tom Miele, Chapter President, mentioned that the Dubai Chapter was the run-a-way winner in that division.

The Detroit Chapter's next meeting this 2012-2013 program year will be held on September 18, 2012. The topic will be "Financial Planning". Check the Chapter's events page to see the dates of upcoming meetings and topics.

Michiana Chapter News

John Engel, Chapter President, recapped the 2011-2012 program year recalling the Chapter's 75th year celebration; CPE offering to professionals who attended the PD Seminar in May with Mr. Excel Bill Jelen, and the successful First Annual Student Conference.

John went on to say that "Without the help of the board and the Michigan Council and other Sponsors, the Student Conference would never have happened." John and the Michiana Chapter Board have already started the planning for the 2013 Student Conference. Watch the chapter's events page for upcoming meetings.

Ken Milani, PH. D., Professor in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame and loyal Guest Speaker at one of the Michiana Chapter meetings each year, coauthored an article that was published in the Summer 2011 issue of "Management Accounting Quarterly".   The article entitled "Budgeting for International Operations, Impact on and Integration with Strategic Planning".  The article examines how international issues influence the budgeting process of multinational companies headquartered in the United States.  Follow this link to the complete article

Grand Rapids Chapter News

Deb Johnson, Chapter President, and the Board of the Grand Rapids Chapter are busy planning more educational opportunities for the new program year.

Kalamazoo Chapter News

Congratulations once again to Mike Write, one of the newest members of the Kalamazoo Chapter who received a Certificate of Distinguished Performance for his high CMA exam score and received an award at the National Conference in Las Vegas in June.  Congratulations Mike!

Lansing-Jackson Chapter News

CoAs the new President of the Lansing-Jackson Chapter, Jimmy Tunney invites business and accounting executives to attend the chapter's next meeting on Tuesday, August 14.  The guest speaker will be Erik Lindquist, Certified Fraud Examiner who will present "Financial Fraud in the Non-Profit Arena".

Upper Peninsula Chapter News

Chapter President, Joel Thompson reported that Summer temperatures are cooler in the Upper Peninsula than down state.  He invites us to consider visiting the Upper Peninsula to escape from the heat!  Just viewing the picture of the falls on the Chapter's website can offer a cooling affect.

Saginaw Valley Chapter News

If the IMA gave awards to Chapters for the best picture displayed on a chapter's home page, the Saginaw Valley Chapter would probably be a winner.

Take time to check the IMA Global website to see what topics are scheduled to be presented each month.  There are two webinar series:  The Inside Talk webinar series explores relevant topics from your profession and delivers timely information to broaden your knowledge and improve your performance.  The Leadership Academy series focuses on building the future of the accounting and finance profession by empowering its members and creating the profession's future leaders.

The next Inside Talk webinar "Profitability Enhancement Study - Putting Money Back into Your Business" will be held on July 11, 2012 at 1pm and the next Leadership Academy webinar "Mentoring" will be held on July 17, 2012 at 1pm.
