Outgoing President's Message:  John Engel, Council President 2013-2014

In my last letter as your President, I want to congratulate all of you for another successful year and I am proud to announce for the 17th straight year your council was awarded the Council Award of Excellence. We also had several Chapters who will have representatives going to Minneapolis, Minn. to accept Banners. They are as follows:

Detroit Chapter, 6th Place Stephenson Division

Michiana Chapter, 12th Place Warner Division

Saginaw Valley, 15th Place Warner Division

Although I have not heard about any other awards we may all be receiving, I am sure that the Michigan Council and its member Chapters were in the mix for them all. We are a great council and that tradition will continue next year when Joe Nycum becomes your President. I have no doubts that the Council and all of our chapters are in good hands. I also want to take time to thank several people individually as I think it is important to thank those people who have made the job of serving as President much easier. First of all I want to thank our Global Directors, Sue Bos, Dana Collins and Chris Mishler. Without their leadership and devotion to the IMA and the Michigan Council, the organization would not be the same. I would also like to thank Joe Nycum our President Elect/Co-Webmaster and Lee Bennett our Webmaster Emeritus for their unwavering assistance which, as many of you know, I have truly needed this year. I also want to thank Jim Horsch and my wife Brenda Engel, your President Elect for 2014-2015, for being my editors of every document that I sent to all of you. Their assistance was very important and insured that documentation was concise and correct. But the most important group of people is all of you, because without great membership no organization can succeed. Your IMA membership and active participation in the Michigan Council has allowed us to prove year after year that we are one of the best Councils, if not the best, in all of the IMA. Thank you for all that you do for the Michigan Council and the IMA!

Demonstrate Your Love of Humanity

By William F. Knese, CMA, CFM, CPA

"Many management accountants I know share a couple of passions: their profession and their love of humanity. They demonstrate these passions in the energy they dedicate to their work and in what they are willing to do for others. In an earlier "Perspectives" column, I wrote about the benefits of service. In this one I'm writing about another way to benefit others-through philanthropy." Read more starting with page 8 of the April 2014 issue of Strategic Finance magazine.

Say Yes to Mentoring

By Olya Kovnatska, CMA

Life is a chain of experiences, some of which stand out more than others. I remember riding a bicycle for the first time like it was yesterday.
