This web-based newsletter serves as notice of our quarterly board meetings and communicates news of Council activities to our board and chapters. News items are shown with headlines and a short intro, linked to the full article on our Michigan Council web pages. News occurring between quarterly newsletter issues will be posted on our Council website, so please check there regularly, too.

Michigan Council Wins 14th Council of Excellence Award

IMA Global Director, Sue Bos Offers Advice to Students Seeking Positions
Sue Bos, CMA, CPASusan E. Bos, CMA, CPA is an IMA Global Board of Directors member. She’s held many IMA volunteer posts with IMA over more than 25 years. Her offices have included Ann Arbor Chapter President, Michigan Council President and National Vice President. She has chaired IMA National Committees, and served several times on the IMA Global Board of Directors.  Sue remains very involved with the Michigan Council of IMA and her chapter. She works on behalf of accounting and finance students at her own Ann Arbor Chapter, and through the Michigan Council. She serves on several academic advisory boards at Eastern Michigan University, in Ypsilanti.  In her profession, Sue is Tax and Accounting Manager for the Washtenaw County Treasurer’s Office in Ann Arbor. In that role, she is experienced in hiring entry-level accountants and interns, as well as experienced accountants.

In a recent interview for IMA’s publication, “Campus Connection”, Sue was asked for her insights into the accounting profession, and for students who are preparing to enter accounting professions.

Register Now for CMA Review Courses

Take the next step toward becoming a Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Cleary University has the program for you.  Cleary University is the only institution in Michigan to offer the Certified Management Accountant Learning System, developed by the Institute of Management Accountants.

Fall classes covering CMA Review Part 1: Financial Planning, Performance and Control started on September 15, 2012 but there is still time to register for the next semester review course.  Winter classes covering Part 2:  Financial Decision Making begin on Saturday, February 9, 2013 and meet six times every other Saturday. CMA exams are offered in Jan & Feb, May & Jun, and Sep & Oct.

Ann Arbor Chapter News

The Ann Arbor Chapter's nest meeting will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2012 and Dr. Lou Petro will speak on "Management Fraud."

The Detroit Chapter's next meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 16, 2012. Susan T. Mathieson will speak on "Health Care Reform".

The Chapter's following meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 and the guest speaker will be Randy Dean.  Randy will present "Time Management - Finding an Extra Hour Every Day".

Michiana Chapter News

The Michiana Chapter's next meeting will be a tour of ND Innovation Park on Tuesday, October 16th.  The November Student Night meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 13, 2012.  The topic for Student Night will be communicated prior to the meeting.

Grand Rapids Chapter News

The Grand Rapids Chapter's next meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 16th.  David Hop of Van Wyk Risk & Financial Management will present a "Risk Management & Insurance Update".  Brenda Pavlak, of Monroe, Sweeris & Tromp will present a "Tax Update" at the Chapter's November 20th meeting.

Global Passport for Success

Mark Jim Gurowka, CAE talks about the history of the CMA and how it's grown from a small U.S. based certification 40 years ago to a mighty international passport.  The CMA has become a global credential with active certified members in almost 100 countries.  This represents phenomenal growth in a program this age.  As economies continue to grow and become more international, finance and accounting professionals the world over have looked for a tool to help them and their companies grow and prosper on the international stage.  For many of them, the CMA Credential has been the answer.
