President's Message:  Joe Nycum, Council President 2014-2015

Each year as brisk temps return, leaves begin changing color and start falling from the trees, we begin craving hot apple cider, cinnamon powdered donuts, and caramel apples along with participating in the excitement of socializing at a Saturday tailgate party and cheering for our favorite football team we are reminded that Fall has arrived.

For many of us the Annual IMA Michigan Council's Fall Conference has also become a tradition that we look forward too. It's a beautiful time of year to travel to East Lansing, Michigan and offers a special opportunity to spend a day socializing and expanding our knowledge with other accounting & finance professionals and students. This year marks the 13th consecutive year that the IMA Michigan Council has offered this event and it continues to feature exceptional guest speakers who are experts in accounting, auditing, economics, ethics, finance, professional development, talent acquisition and more.

When I attended my first IMA Michigan Fall Conference more than a decade ago, I couldn't wait to get back to work the next day to share what I learned with other associates. Each year since, I still leave the conference with the same excitement and desire to share what I learned!

In the August 2014 issue of Strategic Finance, IMA Chair, Joseph A. Vincent, CMA published an article titled "Opportunities for Continuing Education". He stated that "Continuous learning is a lifelong journey that is essential to any profession. We learn on our jobs and in daily life listening to others, reading articles and books, and searching various internet sites." He goes on to say "This summer and fall there are many additional excellent education offerings from local IMA Chapters and Regional Councils."

Take advantage of as many of these educational opportunities as you can. And if you aren't currently serving on the Board or an Advisory Committee of your local IMA Chapter and/or Council, please consider doing so. Such volunteer service is another excellent opportunity to grow professionally and helps insure that programs like the Annual Fall Conference will continue to benefit the accounting and finance profession in the years ahead.
