A Message from President, Dana Collins
President's Letter-February 2012
The Michigan Council will be meeting on March 8, 2012 to discuss strategic plans for the Council and Chapters and we encourage you to attend this meeting if you have an interest in helping to serve the Council in the year ahead. The Michigan Council is proud to provide support to the chapters in Michigan and Northern Indiana through leadership training, providing educational speakers on important topics along with financial support for local events important to each chapter.
The goal of the Council is to assist the chapters in providing benefits to its IMA members by responding to requests for assistance with speakers, topics and other activities and resources as appropriate. Our relationship with Michigan State University, Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State University and Grand Valley University allows us to help sponsor students from our local universities who are interested in attending the National IMA student conference annually and to promote the IMA and value of earning the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation.

IMA Ready to Compete with AICPA for Management Accountants
Jeffrey Thomson, current President and CEO of the Institute of Management Accountants, recently sent a letter to Accounting Today outlining his concerns with the AICPA's plans to "grandfather" CPAs into a new Chartered Global Management Accountant credential for free and without any demonstration of real competency.
It's All About Credibility in Serving the Profession
Jeffrey Thomson learned that another CMA ascended to a prominent position - selected by the SEC to be a member of the PCAOB (Public Company Accounting Oversight Board). You will be learning more about this individual soon. CMAs around the world have ascended to be CEO, CFO, Chairman of FASB, Corporate Controllers, State Controllers and more. They earned their certification by passing a rigorous, relevant, and focused exam.
The Value of the CMA
Make one of your New Year's resolutions to earn the CMA designation. The CMA (Certified Management Account) is the advanced professional certification specifically designed to measure the accounting and financial management skills that drive business performance.
Achieving the CMA credential demonstrates your mastery of financial planning, analysis, control, and decision support, as well as professional ethics.
IMA Predicts Trends Impacting Management Accountants in 2012
"While many people think of 'Accountants' as public accountants during tax season, the reality is that the majority of accounting professionals work inside organizations in management accounting roles such as financial analyst, financial manager, controller or CFO," said Jeff Thomson, CMA, IMA President and CEO. "These professionals can expect unique challenges, as well as opportunities, in 2012, as they hold a broad range of responsibilities such as planning and budgeting, analysis, control and decision support."
