News items are shown with headlines and a short intro, linked to the full article on our Michigan Council web pages. Fresh off the successful Michigan Council Fall Conference held on October 29, I have some reflections on the state of our association. Over 160 conference registrants, speakers, exhibitors, award recipients, and conference team members participated in the 8th Annual IMA Michigan Fall Conference at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center at Michigan State University in East Lansing on Thursday, October 29, 2009. Included were 19 students and faculty from St. Clair College who traveled by bus all the way from Windsor, Ontario in Canada to attend the conference. The 8th annual fall conference was sponsored by the IMA Michigan Council and Robert Half International, with additional support from Cleary University and CTS Telecom, Inc.

The IMA Board of Directors met on September 26, 2009 at Hyannis, Massachusetts. Among the items discussed, which will be of interest to IMA Councils, Chapters and members were Board Diversity, New Leadership Academy, New IMA Initiatives and LinkUp IMA.

Lansing-Jackson Chapter President Gareth Beaty has invited all members, as well as guests from other chapters and Michigan Council delegates to attend the Chapter's 2nd meeting on Thursday, November 19, 2009, at MSU Kellogg Center, 55 S. Harrison, East Lansing, MI. The program will start with a short networking period at 6:00pm, followed by the speaker at 6:15pm, and dinner about 7:15pm. Technical meeting topic is "Fraud in Today's Environment". Please support the resurgence of the Lansing-Jackson Chapter with your attendance!

The Michiana Chapter held its student night on Tuesday, November 17th and had 33 students and
3 faculty members from four local colleges (Indiana University South Bend, Southwestern Michigan
College, Lake Michigan College and Ball State University) in addition to 17 members that attended. Chapter President, Brenda Engel, promoted the value of the IMA and invited students and faculty to consider membership in the IMA. Steve Kemp , a member of the Michiana Chapter, was the featured speaker and he presented a microsoft powerpoint presentation on "Value Based Pricing".

The Chapter had two successful plant tours at Zingerman’s Bakehouse on Saturday, October 10, 2009, at 10am & 2pm. The tour took about 90 minutes, including chocolate, bread, and cake samples. It was a fun gathering for regular, retiree, and student members to get together with their friends and family.

11th Annual IIA/ISACA Spring Conference
Presented by the Detroit Chapters of the IIA and ISACA the 11th Annual Spring Conference is scheduled for March 8-10, 2010 at the University of Michigan Dearborn Fairlane Center. Participation is limited and registration will be accepted on a first come first served basis. Registration information and prices may be found on page 20 of the conference brochure. COSO Supports Integration of Strategy and ERM
On Nov. 4, 2009, The Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) released a new thought paper, Strengthening Enterprise Risk Management for Strategic Advantage. The paper highlights specific areas where senior management can work with its Board of Directors to enhance the Board’s risk oversight capability. Read more
IMA Committees' Response to SEC Roadmap for IFRS use by U.S. Companies
IMA’s Financial Reporting and Small Business Committees submitted comment letters to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in response to its proposed roadmap for the use of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by U.S. Companies. COSO Supports Improved Board Risk Oversight
